Supernatural Central Short and Quick Interview
SC: Tell me a little bit about your main character of this book.
NZ: Mäzzikim (Maze) is based loosely on my younger sister and my late mother. Both struggled to find where they fit in their families and the world until they embraced the power within. Maze is fluent in sarcasm and self-doubt, a bit of a recluse, and, thanks to her ability to engage with the dead, overburdened with knowledge. She cares and empathizes with others but doesn’t want to be a hero. Most importantly, she’s more powerful than she knows. But as a teenager, that can be hard to believe.
SC: Do you believe in the paranormal, and if so, do you have an experience you can share?
NZ: Yes! A few years ago, a few colleagues and I were required to present at a meeting. I knew what we planned to share wouldn’t be well-received, but my concerns fell on deaf ears.
On her death bed, my mother told me her one regret was that she didn’t drink enough milkshakes. She also told me to ask her whenever I needed help. She said if she could find a way to help me, she would.
So, I asked her for help… and the one date Arlington Cemetery could accommodate for the burial was the same day as the presentation. It sounds small, but Arlington had a six-week waiting list at the time…and a spot popped up three weeks earlier. And yes, the presentation went horribly, as I’d warned.
I ask her for help and courage whenever I need it. Even in death, she always comes through for me. I hope, wherever she is, she has access to unlimited milkshakes.
SC: What titles are you working on now that you can tell us about?
NZ: I have lots of irons in the fire. The one that is close to completion is tentatively titled Souls of Prey. In this sequel to Haunted, Maze comes into her power and knows how to wield it against her enemies. She brings that epic main character energy to save the realm from a hateful tyrant.
I’m working on a YA thriller called The Nurture Project, kind of a ‘Sister, Sister’ meets ‘Orphan Black’ type story.
I’m also working on a YA sci-fi story based loosely on the Wizard of Oz. Except the wizard is a pharmaceuticals billionaire, all three witches are politicians, and Dorothy is a drug smuggler…I’m not sure if I’ll publish it, but it’s fun to write!
