JANE GODMAN'S BACK with OTHERWORLD CHALLENGER

Talk about being a busy lady! Back in August we had the chance to talk to Harlequin author Jane Godman about her book IMMORTAL BILLIONAIRE and now she's back for more.
 
I want to talk a little about the artwork on this book. I don't know anything about the models or the graphic artist, but I want to say "well done". He's handsome, she's adorable, and that lantern... does that suggest intrigue or what? Swashbuckling, even.

 

 

As you can see, this book is also a part of the Harlequin Nocturne series. Here's a brief description for you:

We thought you'd like to know a little more about Jane. Jane lives in Cheshire, England, is married to a lovely man and is mum to two grown up children. We were lucky enough (again) to ask her a few questions.

 

SC:.Tell me a little bit about your main character of this book.

 JG: The main character in this book is a necromancer called Jethro de Loix.  Necromancers are sorcerers who have a set of skills, ranging from the ability to converse with the deceased to complete control over the undead. Jethro is a mercenary. He sells his skills to the highest bidder. 

SC: Do you believe in the paranormal and if so, do you have an experience you can share?

JG: I do believe in the paranormal and, although I don’t have any experiences myself, I come from a family who have lots of stories to tell. My great-grandmother was very intuitive and there was a footpath close to her home that she was unable to walk along because of the sensation of hands grabbing her and pulling at her or voices calling to her!  

SC: What titles are you working on now that you can tell us about?

JG: I have a lot going on right now! In September 2016, my third Otherworld title for Harlequin Nocturne, Otherworld Challenger, releases. Then Immortal Billionaire is out in November 2016. 2017 sees the release of my Arctic Brotherhood series for SMP Swerve. Watch out for my Arctic werewolves, they are hot! The Unforgettable Wolf, book four in the Otherworld series is out in March 2017. Oh, and I have a new series, The Sons of Stillwater, with Harlequin Romantic Suspense, in 2017. So, yes. I've been busy!

STRANGER THINGS REVIEW

 

We're heading into the start of the new fall television series premieres, and if you're a TV fan, your time is going to be pretty tied up, but if you're the last person on the planet who hasn't seen this series on NETFLIX, you're really missing out.

First of all, kudos to Winona Ryder (Joyce Byers) who plays a not-so-hot looking whacked out Mom. Her son has gone missing...sort of... she can hear him in another dimension through the walls. This of course leads to shades of Jack Nicholson as she tries to get to him.

The supernatural series plays homage to a lot of cheesy horror flicks that have gone on before it. My favourite is the nod to Poltergeist. When you see the shot, you'll know what I'm talking about. (Remember I am assuming I am talking to the last person on earth.) Here's the trailer for Season Two, that will give you an idea of what we can look for in that regard:

The acting is great, particularly from the cast of kids. Special nods to Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven, and Gaten Matarazzo as Justin.  

Seriously fray, it's fabulous. Pick a rainy day, call in sick, make some popcorn and binge watch this series. Thank me later.

THE GORE GORE GIRLS: WHERE EVIL GROWS

It's a short post today since it's a holiday Monday here in Canada and hopefully you've got big plans for your day off.

In the world of my imagination, if I was lucky enough that Helens-of-Troy would become a supernatural television series,  or at least holiday M.O.W's, this would be the theme song. It's a cover of The Poppy Family's classic "Where Evil Grows," and to be truthful, I like it better than the original.

SHH! IT'S THE HALLOWEEN CAKE RECIPE

Yeah, I know what you're thinking...it's way too early to be thinking about Halloween. The kids aren't even back in school yet.

But I was at Dollarama yesterday and the summer stuff was coming off the shelves (alas) and the Halloween stuff was going on. (YAY!)

Now I can't take credit for this, because this recipe comes from COOKING WITH SUGAR, and I'll going to give you the link to it below. But let me tell you this...this will become your go-to holiday cake. Switch the colours for any occasion. They'll ooh and ah as the colours magically swirl themselves. And you will laugh your ass off as they beg you for the recipe, because it was made with CAKE MIXES. Yes! CAKE MIXES. (And some food colouring). Is it easy? Are you kidding? I made it!

 

 

I know, right? I made it in 2013 and 2014 and 2015...you get the idea. It might make your kitchen messy, but it will not drive you insane to bake. I recommend gel food coloring for the best results.

REVIEW: VANCON 2016 (Supernatural TV Series Convention)

Okay, she says with a heavy sigh...and you know that's never good.

Let's start by saying I'm a big fan of the TV show Supernatural. I live in Vancouver, where it is filmed and every once and a while there's spottings, particularly in my local bookstore. I have the series on DVD. I play Jensen's "Eye of the Tiger" clip whenever I need a laugh.

So when my niece "Buttercup" called to say she was coming to town and wanted to spend some time with me and maybe we could go to Creation Entertainments "Supernatural" convention, this seemed like a win-win.

Except that Buttercup was too late telling me this and the tickets were off-line. Which turned out to be a good thing because Sunday's admission was $200 U.S. a pop.

Now, I get that the stars need to be paid (more on that later), but charging fans this kind of dough, in American bucks no less (that's a big hit on the Canadian dollar) for a show that's filmed here is more than outrageous...it's on the highway robbery side.

Since the show wasn't sold out that day, a friend spotted discount $80.00 Cdn. tickets on GROUPON. So I got two. They turned out to be seats like you'd get released just before a concert after they knew the stage set up, i.e. they were on the far aisles so you had to stretch your neck, but hey...at least in the room, right?

Now to be fair, I didn't see the first day of the show, or attend the karaoke night, and maybe they were fab, but... c'mon.

Three, count 'em three, vendor tables. That's it. Photo ops were also hundreds of dollars, and for the most part sold out. So fans are willing to shell out that kind of money to see Jensen, Jared, Micha et all, which kind of freaks me out.

So what did you get for your 80 smackers? You got to see the panel interviews.

They were hosted by Brianna and Kim, a couple of players on the series. They tried to cover when Misha was late, and I know a lot was ad lib, and they're probably really funny when they're over at your house and you've had a few, but uh... perhaps the humor pushed the line a little too much for that sort of venue, just sayin'. It took them a half an hour to read the "rules". And the pretend "cardboard cut-out" of Micha talking bit was like a high school talent night skit.

Micha lost control of the audience, which surprised me, since he's quite funny when he's on talk shows. He took a question from someone he actually seemed to know, which was kind of weird because she seemed ticked off at him about something. Jared and Jensen seemed very much like "the boys" they are in the series, quick with the wit. So that part was fun, but again the questions didn't seem to come from ordinary fans. And while that's probably good for control, it's always fun to have a loonie-toons ask a few questions to see how the stars react.

Which brings me back to the one big issue I had with the day. While the stars work on a union show and make big union bucks, and deserve to, don't get me wrong...what's with the "volunteers" at the show. Sure it's great that they didn't have to pay the outrageous (hey, over 1000 bucks for a front row seat) ticket prices, but anyone working that show should have got paid. Period. Especially with the money CE took in.

I don't have any photo's today because I'm cheap. And there wasn't much cosplay at this show. I saw one person in a Castiel trench coat. That was about it.

So save your bucks for when Fan-Expo comes to town. It'll still cost you, but it's a lot more reasonable and a lot more fun. And you'll have pictures.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW: Michele Barrow-Belisle

Up today is a brief chat with author Michele Barrow-Belisle, who's here to talk a little bit about her book FREEZE, from the FAIRIE SONG TRILOGY series.

Here's a little bit about the book:

We had a chance to ask Michele our three favourite questions here at Supernatural Central, and here's what she had to say:

SC: Tell me a little bit about your main character of this book.

MBB: It's the story written from the point of view of Zanthiel, the dark shadow faerie who the main character Lorelei is entangled with. He unexpectedly became the fan favourite after the first two books came out and I thought it would be fun to delve into his life to see what makes him so compelling. I love this character and it was the reason I was so eager to write his story. He has fascinated not only me but most of my readers as well. I guess it's because he's got that whole dark-side bad-boy anti-hero thing going on. There's something fascinating and compelling about those characters, so riddled with battle scars worn like badges of honor, behind the fortress surrounding their heart. You want to know what lies behind all of those emotional wounds. This story lets you in behind the wall, behind the scars and into his world. 

SC: No kidding. He sounds fascinating. Do you believe in the paranormal yourself, and if so, do you have an experience you can share with us?

MBB: I have had so many paranormal experiences that I think they're more normal than anything else. I mean, even with this book. I was told on a few different occasions by Psychics that I was meant to do this. It took about three different attempts, the final one being more akin to a hammer on the head than a gentle nudge to finally make me realize they were right. I started writing and I haven't looked back since. It's what fuels my days and it's my favourite creative output. There are times I'm so in the zone, so lost in writing and caught up in the moment, that I have no memory of what I've written when I come out of it. I truly think that at least part of that passion comes from forces in the unseen.

SC: Congrats on that movie option by the way! What titles are you working on now, that you can tell us about?

MMB: Well as I mentioned this series was originally intended as a trilogy. But the secondary characters were begging to have a chance to tell their own story. So there are three novellas coming out before the third book in the trilogy is released. The next in line is MELT, which is told from Venus's point of view. For those who don't know she's not the nicest character in the book-world. I won't say too much so as not to give away any spoilers. And after that her story is BURN, which is Adrius's story. For those who've read FIRE&ICE, the first in the series, they'll remember him as the love interest for the main character Lorelei. Now that the series has been optioned for a motion picture, something we're all extremely excited about, there may even be additional books added to the series. Which is fine by me, since I have no shortage of ideas!
