I've been a bit under the weather as allergy season hits in the PNW. Lucky for us, Debbie Peterson stopped by to have a little chat and cheer us up!
SC: Tell me a little
bit about your main characters of this book.
DP: Wolfaert Dircksen Van Ness is a charming, bold and
fearless seventeenth century sea captain who was swept into a parallel
dimension during a raging storm in the Bermuda triangle. With time and
patience, he finally discovered how to make return trips to this dimension and
does so whenever the whim (and the appropriate storm) hits. It’s during such a
crossing that he encounters the one woman destined to steal his heart. There is
one problem with that though…
Aliyana Rosa Montijo is a tenacious and daring undercover
DEA agent. She’s also a bit of a spitfire. Her current mission is to gain
enough evidence for the United States Drug Enforcement Administration to arrest
a particularly nefarious drug cartel leader and put him away for life. Yet, as
tough as she in on the outside, on the inside she is vulnerable, with a heart
far more fragile than she’ll ever admit aloud and she guards it with ferocity.
The question is, can Wolf break through the wall she built around her heart
before their mission is over?
SC: Do you believe in
the paranormal and if so, do you have an experience you can share?
DP: Yes, actually I do. I have seen ghosts a few times in my
life and at times when seeing a ghost would be the very last thing on my mind.
One such occurrence happened when I was about sixteen. My family had traveled
from Las Vegas to a small town in Utah to help my grandparents move into their
new home. The old farmhouse was probably close to one hundred years old and sat
on about ten acres or so. Anyway, here we were in the middle of the day,
lugging boxes from the back of a truck and into the house, which was crawling
with helpful neighbors. I, of course, didn’t know any of them.
I was given one particular box which was to be taken upstairs and so up I
went. I followed the curve of a tight, winding staircase to the second floor.
When I got to the top I saw this old man standing in the doorway of the bedroom
directly ahead. He wore a plaid shirt underneath his overalls, a floppy hat
that had seen far better days and a pair of round glasses. A typical looking
farmer, right?
I thought that since he was kind of old he was probably
directing traffic and so I asked him where he wanted me to put the box I was
carrying. He didn’t answer me. He just stared. The longer he stared the more
uncomfortable I became. Then, as I opened my mouth to ask the question again
(maybe he was hard of hearing instead of just creepy?) he disappeared. Yep,
right before my eyes he was just GONE. Do keep in mind that this ghost looked
just as mortal as anyone else. He wasn’t the least bit “see-through.” My
hospital ghost also looked mortal, but that’s another story for another day.
These two ghosts are the reason that in my ghostly romances, the ghosts appear
very mortal looking.
SC: What titles are you working on now that you can tell us
about?
DP: Right now I am working on a prequel of sorts to Heart of
the Storm, tentatively titled Van Locken’s Witch, as well as a sequel to Bound
by Oath and Honour, titled, Bound by the Promise of Eden.

Excerpt:
About a half an
hour before sunset, the unease she had carried for the past several hours
turned into a sudden feeling of dread. Panic overtook all rational thought and
settled into her soul. Something terrible had happened. She raced toward her
supplies and grabbed her backpack. Her fingers shook as she unzipped the bag
and yanked out her phone. She called Greg’s number several times over before it
dawned on her that he had already boarded a plane headed for Colombia. She
wouldn’t be able to contact him until the morning.
Despite all
attempts to banish it, the dread grew stronger with each passing hour. A
growing notion that Wolf and his crew never left the sub took firm hold. The
conscientious men of the Wieven could very well have remained behind to ensure
that all went according to plan. The thought of such an occurrence made her
sick to her stomach. What if they could die as she had always feared? What if
they died in that sub along with Mercado’s men? She couldn’t sleep, and she
couldn’t eat. All throughout the long hours of the night, she restlessly paced
along the shore, waiting, hoping, and praying.
By the time the
gloomy morning arrived, what little hope she’d carried throughout the long
night dissipated. Somewhere in her heart, she finally accepted that her beloved
captain wouldn’t be coming for her. Not now. Not ever again.
