HOLIDAY EXTRAVAGANZA FEATURE with TENA STETLER (Charm Me Again)

Mystery of the Missing Christmas Lighting Display

As Christmas approaches one family tradition is to drive the neighborhoods enjoying the Christmas lighting displays everyone puts up.  The last few years there have been less and less.  I understand, as our own lighting display has been downsized.
Last year many around our area protested a utilities rate hike in November set to reap the benefits of those who put up Christmas lighting displays.  Yes, sadly we were one of those, since the year before our December utility bill had been a lot higher than in previous years.  We couldn’t afford another huge increase, and the deliberate timing of the hike was deliberately grinchy, so we put up only the minimal lighting display. It was a sad year for enjoying Christmas lights displays.
This year, the rate hike will be put off until January as in previous years, except last year. Wise decision utilities department. The lightening displays have returned, and ours included.

The real point of this post is for many years, we watched a certain home in our area add to his homemade Christmas display and looked forward to seeing what had been added each year. It was not religious in nature, but fun.

There were Peanuts characters, then Tweety Bird and its companions, Little Mermaid, the Grinch, Disney Characters, Winnie the Pooh and pals, just to name a few, all homemade. Spotlights illumined the display.  Suddenly about four years ago, not only were there no new characters, but the display disappeared entirely. Each Christmas we checked, still the house was dark, no sign of the previously wonderful Christmas light and character display.

Had they moved, after all this is a military town, people come and go a lot? Was there a family illness or emergency that caused the display to go missing?  While we reveled in the other fantastic lighting displays, we were saddened as we drove past the dark house checking each year.

No we never knew the people who lived in that house. But we felt a connection to them watching the display grow year after year.
On December 10, 2017, we clambered into our truck, hot chocolate in hand, to go check out the neighborhood Christmas lights. With trepidation we turned the corner where the darkened house had been for several years. Lo and behold, in all its previous glory the Christmas lights and beloved characters were on the front lawn, house and roof.
We were ecstatic to see the house lit up once again, the Peanuts merry-go-round spinning slowly, all the other cartoon characters smiling broadly. No new characters, but that was all right because the decorations were back.

We took pictures, and decided to share the beloved display with you. Funny how one thing can brighten your spirits as that house did ours that night.

This year I believe we will go back to that house and knock on their door and tell them how much we have enjoyed their display throughout the years. Also how much we missed it when it was gone.  Christmas lighting is a time consuming, expensive endeavor and a labor of love. To those of you who set up Christmas displays year after year, THANK YOU!

Please share your Christmas Traditions with us in the comments.

Excerpt
Suddenly, the wind changed direction, a thin maroon line formed along the flat bottom of the dark clouds spreading across the sky where moments before there’d been only a few fluffy cotton ball clouds in a sea of blue. The maroon line widened then switched to vertical and spread open to reveal a shimmering interior.
Shadows emerged from the cloud then disappeared. As he was about to comment, huge raindrops plopped on the ground followed by pea size hail that grew to softball size.
Josie ran for cover and he followed. Protected under a ledge, she cupped her hands over her ears as the roaring of the storm combined with huge ice balls smashing against rocks echoed through the canyon. She elbowed him and cocked a brow in question, pointing to the vegetation that remained unharmed.
His eyes narrowed. Something isn’t right. I can feel it. Magic is spinning this storm. But who—how and why? At a loss for answers, he shrugged and urged her further under the ledge to wait out the storm. Brushing the wet strands of hair out of her face, he smiled. She looked like a drowned rat but the fragrance around her reminded him of sweet spring flowers. He leaned into to her and brushed his lips over hers. Immediately, he straightened and backed away. Her eyes were still closed. Maybe I could’ve lingered…

Her eyes blinked open and she licked her lips. After a beat, she waggled a finger in front of him. “Not a good idea.”

INTERVIEW with STEPHANIE MIRRO (Her Majesty's Fury)

Great to have an author in the house today. Welcome Stephanie Mirro!

SC: Tell me a little bit about your main character of this book.

SM: Serafina Finch is a 25 year old graduate student in Washington, D.C. With Sera, I wrote what I know best, so she has some of my personality quirks like her love for coffee and books. But I also wrote her as someone I wish I could become. Over the course of the first 3 books, she grows from a somewhat timid, not-wanting-to-rock-the-boat kind of gal, into a confident, strong woman with a snarky ancient god as her sidekick (just don’t tell Bacchus I said that!).
SC: Speaking of ancient gods and the powers they possess, do you believe in the paranormal and if so, do you have an experience you can share?

SM: This is such a difficult question for me to answer! Yes and no. I’m an atheist, so I don’t believe in ghosts and spells and the like (but I wish I did, for real), but I’m still afraid of monsters in the dark. I’m pretty open minded, so I'll admit I’m wrong should something show itself to me. And because I have to be a conundrum, I believe in the idea of karma, especially when it comes to money. Respect money and you’ll always have some when you need it the most.
SC: Well, you will have to let us know if you experience anything in the future.  What titles are you working on now that you can tell us about?

SM: I am working on book 3 in my Immortal Relics series, titled Descent to Hel. My goal is to publish it by May or June of 2020. The story continues to follow Sera’s journey, only this time she’ll have to visit Hel, the Norse goddess of the underworld, in her own realm. Dun dun dun!
SC: Thanks for stopping by for a chat. Let's take alook at your book now.

EXCERPT 3:

A few hours later, as sunlight started to drift up over the horizon, a soft scratching sound came from the back door. Renee was still sleeping, so Sera set her cup of coffee on the kitchen table before approaching the door. She pulled the blinds back. A small, dark-skinned boy, who might have been in his early teens, stared back at her.
She gave him a questioning look.
Let us in, let us in, or we’ll blow your house down, a snickering voice echoed around her head.
Who are you? she sent her thought back.
Ah! So the rumors of your Gift are true. Your canine friend talked of a fight? We’re in. She could almost see the grinning smile in the shadows of her mind.
You didn’t answer my question, she said.
I am Eshu. So matter-of-fact, so not what she was looking for.

Sera muttered under her breath. Damn gods.

About the Author:

Stephanie Mirro's lifelong love of ancient mythology led to majoring in the Classics in college, which wasn't quite as much fun as writing her own mythology stories as she did as a child. But that education, combined with an overactive imagination and being an avid fantasy reader, resulted in a writing career.

Starting her days with coffee and ending them with wine means Stephanie can usually be found juggling household chores, keeping the kids alive, and trying to write, edit, publish, and market the stories that haunt her dreams.

Born and raised in Southern Arizona, Stephanie now resides in Northern Virginia with her husband, two kids, and two furbabies. This thing called “seasons” is still magical.

Excerpt:
There was no way on earth or beyond she was going behind the chutes. The last time she’d done that had cured her on rodeos and rodeo cowboys for life. She had no intention of repeating the experience. The very thought of going back there left her thoroughly disturbed.
She sent a text to Gage, telling him to meet her near the ticket booth. It was only after she hit send that she realized she should have mentioned she was the one there, not Trevor.
Gage would figure it out soon enough, she supposed.
She leaned against the corner of the ticket booth, out of the way, and watched the faces of those coming and going. Through the crowd, she caught a glimpse of a face that looked familiar as a cowboy jogged her way.
Tally sucked in a gulp of air, unprepared for how much Gage had changed since she’d last seen him in person. The boy she’d had a crush on had morphed into a very handsome man. His dark brown hair was shorter, his shoulders broader, his body a finely-tuned machine of muscle. She noticed a scar on his right cheek that hadn’t been there before, yet it only added to his rugged appeal.
But his eyes were the same magnificent shade of blue, and his lips still appeared incredibly kissable. When he looked at a little girl wearing a pink tutu over her denim overalls, his grin kicked up the left side of his mouth just as she remembered.
He didn’t appear to have gotten taller than his already six-foot height, but he looked stronger and more capable than he had all those years ago.
Tally noticed several women eyeing him as he made his way through the crowd. He didn’t even seem to notice them as he scanned the faces, no doubt searching for her brother. She stepped away from the ticket booth and headed toward him.
She tried to catch his eye, but he looked right past her, as though she didn’t exist. Not that it surprised her. Guys like Gage weren’t interested in girls like her — girls who would never be mistaken for a model, had brains in their heads, and held to an unyielding set of morals.
Nope. There was nothing about her that would be of the slightest interest to a cowboy like Gage.
Tally waited until she was standing directly behind him to tap him on the shoulder.
“Gage Taggart,” she said in a voice she used to subdue unruly patients. He jerked and turned around to stare at her.
She could see him struggling to pull her identity from his memories. Insulted he hadn’t yet figured out who she was, someone jostled into her and she bumped against Gage. Something electric and completely unexpected arced between the two of them. Tally wanted no part of whatever it was and moved back.
Eager to get the torturous errand over with, she held the gear bag out to him. “Trevor sent me with this.”
“Where’s Trev?” Gage asked, taking the bag and looking around like her brother might suddenly materialize. “Who was I texting a minute ago if it wasn’t him?”
“That would be me. I’m sure you don’t remember, but I’m Trevor’s sister.”
“Tally? You’re little Tally?” He held his hand down near his waist, indicating the height he thought she should be.
She nodded and Gage broke into a wide grin.
“You were always such a cute kid with those big gray eyes, sturdy little legs, and chubby cheeks.” He reached out and playfully pinched her cheek. “You haven’t changed a bit. Aren’t you like, fifteen, maybe sixteen?”

INTERVIEW with MEREDITH ALLARD (Down Salem Way)

Spreading some warmth as the days get chillier in this part of the world. Welcome, Meredith Allard. Tell us a little bit about your main character of this book, Down Salem Way.

MA: The main character of Down Salem Way is James Wentworth, a young man who left England with his father, John, in 1690 in hopes of furthering John’s prosperous mercantile business in the American colonies. They settle in Salem in the Massachusetts Bay Colony where James falls in love with Elizabeth Jones, a farmer’s daughter. James wants to be a dutiful son and he stays in Salem helping John with his business, but he’s torn because he wants to return to England to his studies at Cambridge. Suddenly, the Salem Witch Trials rear their ugly heads and James and Elizabeth find themselves caught up in the madness. Really, it’s james’ love for Elizabeth that drives this story. Down Salem Way is written as James’ diary as he and Elizabeth experience the witch hunt hysteria in Salem.

SC: Ah, Salem. Certainly a place full of strange happenings throughout history. Do you believe in the paranormal and if so, do you have an experience you can share?

MA: I’ve had a lot of questions about whether or not I believe in the supernatural elements of the Loving Husband books. I don’t believe that vampires or werewolves actually exist. I don’t think it’s so much about believing in Wiccans because they’re really there. There are many all over the world who consider themselves Wiccan. Do they have magic powers like Miriam and the other witches in the Loving Husband books? I know Wiccans cast spells, and I’m not one to judge whether or not their spells work!

I believe that human beings are composed of body, mind, and spirit. I believe we’re more than our earthly experiences and five senses show us. I do believe our souls go on after our human bodies die, and I think it’s possible that those souls go on to be reincarnated. Down Salem Way and The Loving Husband Trilogy are fiction, and the reason I love writing fiction above all else is because it allows me to explore the possibilities. Paranormal events may or may not happen—I don’t know for sure one way or the other—but writing these books was my way of wondering aloud what the paranormal world (and vampires and witches) might look like if it was real.
SC: Well, if the possibilities ever become realities, do let us know. What titles are you working on now that you can tell us about?

MA: My next novel is going to be a Christmas book from my Hembry Castle series. When It Rained at Hembry Castle is based on my love for Charles Dickens and Downton Abbey, and it’s a sweet Victorian romance. Christmas at Hembry Castle will be released Winter 2020. You can visit me online at www.meredithallard.com to learn more about Down Salem Way, the Loving Husband Trilogy, and When It Rained at Hembry Castle, and my future books as well.

SC: Thanks so much for dropping in today. Let's take a look at your novel now.

Excerpt:

“Would you like a lesson?” I asked.
“Aye,” Lizzie said. “Thank you.”
Lizzie has progressed well in her reading. And quickly too. I believe our nightly lessons help bond us more quickly than we might have otherwise since our readings prompt long discussions where we learn much about each other. After we read the rest of the passage together, I did the impossible: I cajoled my wife into reading aloud on her own.
“No one has such a lovely voice as you,” I said.
Lizzie laughed. “You think your sweet tongue will persuade me to read alone? When you are such a learned man?” She turned away, her cheeks flushed.
“But you know how I love listening to you speak. Tis like hearing a serenata by Alessandro Stradella.”
“Who?”
I reached for our favorite volume of poetry. “Tis time, Lizzie. Read to me.”
Lizzie turned the book in her hands, over and over. Finally, she nodded. She tentatively opened the book. “What would you like to hear?”
“You know.”
Lizzie’s smile rivals the brightest sunshine. She opened to the page, exhaled, and read, haltingly, with pauses, some from a struggle to sound out or recall the words, some from embarrassment that she read alone. After the first two lines, her voice grew in confidence.
If ever two were one, then surely we.
If ever man were loved by wife, then thee.
If ever wife was happy in a man,
Compare with me, ye women, if you can.
I prize thy love more than whole mines of gold,
Or all the riches that the East doth hold.
My love is such that rivers cannot quench,
Nor ought but love from thee give recompense.
Thy love is such I can no way repay;
The heavens reward thee manifold, I pray.
Then while we live, in love let’s so persever,
That when we live no more, we may live ever.
Lizzie closed the book. “Tis true, you know.”
“What is?” I asked.
“This poem, To My Dear and Loving Husband. Tis as though everything I feel for you has been written here, by this woman, a magistrate’s wife I’ll never meet. You are…” Lizzie blushed, hot along her jaw. I touched her cheek and lifted her head so I could see into her eyes. “If ever man were loved by wife, then thee. That is how…”
“Tis all right, Lizzie. You can tell me anything.”
“That is how I feel about you. You are my dear and loving husband, James Wentworth.”
I knelt before Lizzie, pressing her hand to my lips.
“I knew the moment I saw you over the supper table that you were the one for me. I cannot imagine waking up every morning for the rest of my life without looking into your beautiful eyes. I cannot imagine walking through this world without knowing that you were here waiting for me. I cannot imagine having the strength to breathe without you. You are my dear and loving wife, Elizabeth Wentworth. And I love you. I shall never leave you. Ever.”
I swept my wife into my arms and carried her away.
