GUEST BLOG WITH AUTHOR LM PRESTON (Scepter of Fire)

What a treat!
Author L.M. Preston is dropping by to be a guest blogger today!

10 Things I Wish I Knew About By LM Preston
Being an Author I Didn’t Know Before

When I first started on my writing journey, I was extremely naive. If I had it to do over again I would have researched the publishing business inside and out, hired a writing coach if I had the money or taken some classes before I sat down to write the first word. It would have saved me a school full of hardknocks 😀
Here’s my list, read it, breathe it, learn from it.

1. Being a writer means being able to take rejection, critiques, and to grow and thrive in spite of it.
2. Being a writer means I have to sell myself, learn how to, and it all starts with selling your stuff to a beta reader, then to a lit agent, a publisher, a reviewer, and then to your audience.

3. As a writer, I’m a business owner, and my business is my career.  My product is my works.
4. Being a writer opens doors that you wouldn’t believe! And you don’t even have to be published to get those doors opened! There are tons of soon-to-be published authors doing amazing things that they only would have pursued if they were writers.

5. I wished I would have researched the publishing business from the author side, the publisher side, the indie publisher side, the promotions side, the marketing side – doggone it – every side!
6. Being a writer means having a platform – yep, friends on twitter, a meaningful blog, involvement in a writers’ organization – as an active member.

7. I can market my book before it’s even published! Create a book trailer, share teasers, promo samples on twitter, do contest, and get myself out there!
8. Conferences, pitch sessions, agent inboxs are great places to get face time with agents. I should have hung out there.

9. Use Beta Readers, Critique Partners and Writing Groups to build a better product. As the writer, you want to know what the reader is getting out of your work.
10.Realize that anything I write is marketable (once it’s edited professionally, beta read, critiqued and flushed out) I need to figure out what that market is and not be afraid to go into unknown territory to promote it and myself. (i.e., anthologies, magazines online or print, or even sell it myself.)

I end this list to say, once you learn the business, you’ll know how you fit in, how many ways you can create your own success, and you’ll know that giving up simply isn’t an option when YOU decide your destiny.

Date Published: May 1st, 2020

Genre: Urban Fantasy/YA

Book Description:

Dexter didn’t like being a pawn. It seems life was taking him there though. His father and he never saw eye to eye, but being captured and tortured for his father’s mistakes gave Dexter too much to think about.

First, the girl he lost, he’d never forget what they did to her. It changed him, and made him see the small city his father moved him to for what is was, a prison for magicals, the damned, and now him.

Too bad, the creator of the void didn’t realize they would be better off if they’d set him free, because now, he was fighting for his life, and someone he’d have to hide his feelings from to protect, not just from those that want to drag them back, but from him -a vigilant.

Excerpt 1:

Dexter kept his eyes closed.  The binds at his wrist were cold, unforgiving and rigid chains. He needed to stay calm, take it all in and wait until they’d left him alone. His shirt was loose, and his sleeve covered one of the chains on his wrist while the other was rolled high on his shoulder.
“Doctor Rutherford said to hold him until they come to take him,” a woman who adjusted his head on the pillow mentioned.
“How long has he been like that?” a male asked.
Dexter remained stone still, keeping his breathing even as his eyelid nearly twitched from the man’s breath near his face. He felt the lift of his eyelid. Keeping his eyes still, while the man flashed a light into them was nearly impossible. Dexter forced himself not to focus, but noted the man’s dark skin and brown eyes. He could have sworn the guy winked at him. Still, Dexter didn’t trust it, he didn’t budge. The man let Dexter’s eyelid go. Dexter almost sighed. It was hard to not blink. He had to wait though, for that one chance to get out.
“The others he came with will be taken also. Don’t get in the way of those that come to collect. If you do…” the woman warned.
Dexter forced his fist not to clinch at the mention of his family that was in the car crash with him. He remembered when they sunk into the water. He’d fought to get the door opened and his younger siblings out. Then something hit his head, and he’d drowned in water when everything went black.
“Like you, I just work here for the paycheck. This hospital needs to be condemned anyway. I was there when they bought them in from the emergency room. I wanted to see how he was doing myself. I swear he wasn’t breathing when they pumped his stomach of water from the lake.”
“Nathan, just give him the shot and clear out, you don’t want to be here when they take them. It’s never pleasant. I like you. You’re new here, and if you want to keep your job, you will stop asking questions.”
  “Got it.”
Dexter heard footsteps. Light, and sure, it was the female nurse. Nathan remained there though, still, but the heaviness of his presence was over Dexter.
“I can’t help you much, but if you have it in you, get the hell out of here. The hospital is going up in flames. Your father and oldest sister, are on this floor, the others... Sorry we couldn’t help all of you.”

Dexter didn’t trust it. He remained still as the chains on his feet were removed.

Tagline: An intolerable order. A desperate charade. A deadly secret.

Book Description:

“She wasn’t dreaming, in a coma, having a mental breakdown, or in hell.
She was abducted by aliens.”

Before Commander Torek Renaar can return to active duty, he’s ordered to purchase an animal companion to help relieve his PTSD symptoms. But having been a caretaker for and lost a loved one, keeping even one little human alive is a challenge he feels doomed to fail. It doesn’t help that his animal companion is the newest, most exotic breed on the market, demanding constant attention, daily grooming, and delicate handling. If she doesn’t die first in his incompetent care, she’ll be the death of him.

After witnessing the murder of her domestication specialist, Delaney McCormick allows her new owner to treat her like the pet he believes her to be. If anyone suspects she’s more intelligent than a golden retriever, her murder would be next. She endures the humiliation of being washed, the tediousness of being trained to “sit” and “come,” and the intrigue of hearing private conversations. But in Torek’s care, she finds something unexpected on this antarctic planet, something she never had in all her years on Earth while house-hopping between foster families: a home.

As companionship grows to love, must Delaney continue the charade, acting like an animal and hiding from the murderer waiting on her misstep? Or can she trust Torek with her secrets, even if the truth threatens everything he holds dear—and both their lives?

About the Author:

Melody Johnson is the author of the “out of this world” Love Beyond series and the gritty, paranormal romance Night Blood series published by Kensington Publishing/ Lyrical Press. The City Beneath (Night Blood, book 1) was a finalist in the “Cleveland Rocks” and “Fool For Love” contests.

Melody graduated magna cum laude from Lycoming College with her B.A. in creative writing and psychology. Throughout college, she wrote contemporary love stories, but having read and adored the action and dark mystery of vampires her whole life, decided to add her fingerprint to the paranormal genre.

Melody's unique perspective on vampires lends fresh bite to a classic paranormal genre. In addition to a reimagined transformation—the requirement of night blood—vampires have gargoyle-looking, vicious day forms, an orgasmic bite, and as the series progresses to Sweet Last Drop (book 2), a mindless, rampaging, zombie-like breed is introduced. Melody is constantly upping the stakes, and Day Reaper (book 4) is no exception.

Beyond the Next Star is an exciting branch from Melody's paranormal romance roots, keeping the dark grit from her Night Blood Series and taking it to new worlds. Told from the dual perspectives of both human pet and alien owner, Melody's story weaves a slow-burn romance that explores the bonds of love in all its forms, navigating the main characters’ relationship in delicate stages from oblivious ownership to woke, romantic love.

After moving from her northeast Pennsylvania hometown for some much needed Southern sunshine, Melody now works as a digital media coordinator for Southeast Georgia Health System’s marketing department. When she isn’t working or writing, Melody can be found swimming at the beach, reading at the pool, and exploring her new home in southeast Georgia.

INTERVIEW WITH D.L. BLADE (The Dark Awakening)

Mid-way through this very weird May, and we’re lucky to have a virtual guest drop by to answer our three favourite questions. Welcome author D.L. Blade!

SC: Tell me a little bit about your main character of this book.

DLB: Mercy is the typical teenager. Close group of friends, an ex-boyfriend who she struggles to draw a line with between what they had and what she wants them to have now (friendship), but also, challenges that come her way that she is too young and naïve to handle in such a short time.

She learns she’s a witch, she died during the Salem witch trials, she’s been resurrected in the 21st century, she’s a vampire hunter, and the world relies on her to save them.
Whew, how would anyone handle it? You see her fear, her distrust, her trusting too much, but also her growth. She is not the same girl by the end of the book, and you will see how powerful she becomes as the series progresses.

Mercy may make choices that will frustrate the reader, but you will also understand why she does everything she does. She sacrifices everything for the ones she loves, because if she doesn’t, she’d fail, and when you learn about who these villains are and what they have planned, she must do everything in her power to defeat them.

SC:How does anyone handle it, indeed! Do you believe in the paranormal and if so, do you have an experience you can share?

DLB: I do! I’m from southern California and I was part of a ghost hunting team in San Diego. We had some pretty crazy experiences, from evps on my own recorders, videos, and I’ve definitely been touched a time or two in a haunted location by unknown entities.

SC: Great to hear you’re one of us! What titles are you working on now that you can tell us about?

DLB: I’m halfway through writing my next novel, which is a pirate fantasy romance. I am also working on a character spin-off from my paranormal witch trilogy. The pirate book should come out this fall/winter, and the spin-off, next year.

SC: You’ve been great! Let’s take a look at your book now!

EXCERPT 2

They were there in the shadows again. This was the third time this week I had thought someone was watching me.
The last few weeks, I’d heard the rustling of leaves and the crackling sound of old fallen branches beneath someone’s feet, or the hairs at the back of my neck would stand straight because I knew someone stood silently behind me. Last night wasn’t any different. I exited my car after an exhausting day at work and heard what sounded like a low, deep exhale coming from the forest next to Lily’s house. I swiftly turned around, fumbling with the flashlight on my phone, but when the light pierced the darkness, the sound stopped.
Tonight, it was a silhouette behind my aunt Lily’s fence in the backyard. It wasn’t someone walking by with their dog or a neighbor taking out their trash. They were standing there, staring, as I walked to the sink to rinse my dinner bowl. I wasn’t going to tell her again. She’d just tell me what she’d told me last time I brought it up. She’d say I was just seeing things and that it was normal to feel this way after trauma.
“Your turn, Mercy,” Lily said. Her voice pulled my gaze from the window.
“I’m coming,” I said, taking one last glance toward the silhouette.
They were gone.

About the Author:

D.L. Blade grew up in southern California, but relocated to Colorado with her family in 2014.

She always loved writing, concentrating on poetry rather than prose when she was younger. That changed however, when she had a dream one night and decided to create a story about it.

In her spare time, D.L. enjoys a wide variety of hobbies, including reading, attending rock concerts and volunteering at local animal shelters where she can indulge in her passion for all forms of life.

In the future, D.L. hopes that she can continue to write exciting novels that will captivate her readers and bring them into the worlds that she creates using her imagination.

INTERVIEW WITH M.L. MASTRAN (Bloodlines-Albion Moon Chronicles Book II)

Hello and welcome to June. It will be interesting to see what this month brings as we all face our new world. Lucky for us, we've got an author in the house today. M.L. Mastran is here to answer our three fave questions. Welcome!
SC: Tell me a little bit about your main character of this book.

MLM: My main character is Evaline; fearless, beautiful and strong. She represents the resilience to adversity and is willing to protect her family no matter what. She has gone through a few changes since Book one as well.  She is still adjusting to her new life and new family with Mason but those old secrets that found them in book one, are very much still a threat.  She also lets readers see what happened to Mason and his family and the heartbreaking way they came to be, through their memories as that is one of the abilities she now has.  Additionally, she makes a tough decision and has to leave something behind when the family abruptly has to travel afar. This point proves her strength and willingness to protect what she loves.  I think fans of the first book will love this book because of where she goes and how she shows us.  As she takes us on this amazing journey, this book is about confrontation and revelation.  So there are definitely some heart pounding moments as well as a couple soul crushing instants.
SC: Evaline sounds like quite the woman. Do you believe in the paranormal and if so, do you have an experience you can share?

MLM:  I do believe in the paranormal to a degree.  Do I believe werewolves and vampires exist; perhaps but not the way pop culture or even mythologies describe them.  Vampires for instance, if they actually looked like Brad Pitt or Kate Beckinsale, would we all want to be one 😊 I believe lore has a basis and if vampires did exist, they would in fact be more demonic and closer to Max Shrek in Nosferatu.  Its of course more exhilarating and fun to portray them as beautiful monsters.  The same could be said about Werewolves.  With perhaps a few exceptions in modern depictions, mythology typically portrayed them as cursed and aligned with the beast.  These stories usually had a tragic end.   Those of you who read Book one will agree my story is a bit different than others and really tackles a few of those perceptions.  Do I believe in ghosts-absolutely.  There are just too many little things I have had happen to not believe.
SC:  What titles are you working on now that you can tell us about?

MLM:  I am currently working on two more stories.  The first is of course book three in the Albion Moon Chronicles.  I do not have a title yet but I can say after you read Bloodlines, you can probably guess where book three will go.  The second book I’m working on is a stand alone and is a paranormal romance.  I have a title I’m playing with but I don’t want to reveal it at this time. I can say this, those of you who love the romances with a time element in it, will LOVE it.  It will likely be out later this year before Book three of the chronicles is released. Keep checking my social media for updates.
SC: Thanks for the quick chat. Let's take a look at your latest book now!

Excerpt:

She got her keys out of her jacket pocket then exited the home onto the porch. Before going down the steps, she stopped. A shiver coursed through her body; the same feeling as when one was being watched. She peered down the street and saw nothing amiss. Same thing for across and the other side.
Her gut swirled, telling her to turn around. The tree across the street looked different, but she couldn’t quite figure out why. Its leaves and branches stirred in an unnatural way, seeming to dance on their own against the breeze.  Every hair on her body stood up at once. The deep silence bothered her—no crickets chirped, nor owls hooted, and there was no sway of the trees or tall grass; the night was calm. She decided to get the book then go inside. After unlocking the car with her key fob, she opened the car door, stretching her arm over and into the back seat.
“Where are you?” she mumbled.
She didn’t see it moving all around, whatever it was. Given the surrounding movement, undoubtedly it wasn’t just one.  The tree trunks seemed to come alive as the tall grass across the street shifted. Silent like shadows, they moved, staying just enough out of sight. Kristy found the book underneath the front seat.
She got out of the car then scanned nearby her. Nothing. Kristy hurriedly closed the car door and turned toward the porch. She peeked over her shoulder. An involuntary gasp escaped her. Shadows darted toward her. She got to the steps and froze. Her eyes widened, and her heart pounded in her chest. The pit of her stomach churned. Not shadows, animals. She could now hear the low growls from the animals around her. But what were they?
She blinked and, just like that, a man stood in front of her. He wasn’t wearing any clothes and had a gleam shimmering in his eyes.
She wanted to scream, but the man caught her attention.
“Uh uh uh,” he said as he put his finger to his lips and then in one breathe, he whispered, “Shhhhhhh.”
His fingernail was long and black with a slight curve at the tip. The man grinned, with glowing eyes and wild should-length hair, but he had a trimmed beard. A voice inside her head was screaming to run as she frantically looked for an escape. Her adrenaline pumped as she saw a chance to get away and tried to take it but before she could do anything, something grabbed her from behind and clenched her tight, it was difficult to breathe. The man neared and stopped, only inches away.
In a harsh, low tone, he said, “If you struggle, it will take less than a second for him to squeeze the life out of you. Don’t.”

About the Author:

Nothing captures the attention of M.L. Mastran more than writing a good story with amazing characters and a history arc that made the history books. This is the Albion Moon Chronicles in every sense.

On the flip side, M.L. can also journey to another world completely and pull the same elements with fantasy and make the reader yearn for more. Her uncanny ability to blend genres makes her unique to the literary world and an absolute reading joy. From the first moment you open the page, curiosity will pull you in and keep you engrossed in the story as you take the voyage with the characters to different places and times; to experience the events as they unfold.

Whether being told from a one character perspective or several points of view, her stories will unfold in your mind like a movie playing in your head. This is what pushes M.L to write her stories. It’s the thrill of the read and the drive to carry readers away that will make this trip to the literary world of imagination all the sweeter.

M. L. was born in Scranton Pennsylvania but was raised in Youngstown, Ohio, which is also where she currently resides with her husband and son.  Since a young age, she has always had a passion for storytelling.  Anything that was of interest to her she could find a story with however, it was her stories of experiences such as walking in an old cemetery, to riding a roller coaster to walking the lonely isles of an old junk yard that seemed the most precious.

M. L. has an undergraduate degree in Communication but also majored in History, which is what her Master’s Degree is in as well.  She also started on her PHD in History.  This love of history is very evident in most of M. L.’s stories. While studying for both degrees, she wrote numerous works for the academic audience.  Many of which were presented and published for both student and professional audiences, but at home she would continue to dabble with her love of fiction.  It was the challenge of creating a new world and characters that would make for some great stories.  In fact, she found out very quickly, strong characters drive the story and make it worth the journey.
