INTERVIEW WITH CORNELIA AMIRI (The Lynx and the Druidess)

We're going to start off this last week of August with a short interview with Cornelia Amiri!

SC: Tell me a little bit about the main characters of this book.

CA: The heroine is Wyndolen, slender and petite, with long raven black hair and luscious brown eyes which always hold a spark, just as there is always an energy in her step. Charming, passionate, and gifted with natural leadership, she’s the druidess of the Silure tribe in Britain during the time of emperor Claudius in first century BC.

The hero is the Welsh sun god Lleu. He has deep amber eyes and thick, dark auburn hair and a short beard. He’s naturally driven to uphold all which is right and defeat all which is wrong. In the Lynx and the Druidess, all that is wrong turns out to be the Romans who under emperor Claudius are trying to conquer Britain. Additionally, Lleu is always attracted to a challenge and in my story, that challenge is winning the heart of druidess Wyndolen.
SC:  Do you believe in the paranormal and if so, do you have an experience you can share?

CA: Since a child, I have embraced the philosophy that anything is possible, so I believe in the paranormal. I had a common paranormal experience once. When my grandmother died, before I was told of her death, I had a vision of her standing in a lush green field, with a broad smile on her face. I recognized it as the area of Mississippi she came from and loved. I was bursting with joy during this experience. When I found out she’d died, I knew she’d come to me in that moment to let me know she had passed on to a better place and that she was happy.
SC: Thanks for sharing your story. What titles are you working on now that you can tell us about?

CA: I am working on a sci-fi comedy romance (space opera) novel titled Rare Finds. It’s set a couple of millennia into the future and takes place on a huge starship called the Celestial. The hero is a Xenoarchaeologist, Dr. McGregor, known as Robbie. He’s an earthman, who is proud of his Scottish culture, heritage, and accent. He’s a civilian, not a military scientist, and newly transferred to the Celestial to explore the archeology of unknown planets and their ancient alien inhabitants. It’s a position he worked for and prepared for his whole life. So, he travels from one planet to the next, experiencing a totally different adventure on each one.
The heroine is the ancient Irish goddess Niamh, pronounced Neeve. She’s the Goddess of Beauty and Brightness, the daughter of the Irish sea god, ManannĂ¡n mac Lir. Niamh has creamy skin, dark lashes, and eyebrows. Her name means radiant and that she is. She and Robbie meet on the first planet he goes to. I don’t want to give anything away, especially since I haven’t even finished the first draft yet, but things happen that cause her to join Robbie aboard the ship to work as his assistant. So, she travels with him and shares his adventures and discoveries from planet to planet.

SC: Busy gal! We'd better let you get back to your work. Let's take a look at today's novel now.

Excerpt:

With her heart hammering, Wyndolen stared with wonder at Lleu’s luscious nude body. She only glanced away long enough to pull a white robe, speckled with gold, out of the chest in the corner. She tugged it on, then fastened a plaid cloak over it with a round silver broach and latched her gaze onto Lleu again while he slipped his clothes back on.
They left the roundhouse and walked hand in hand to Cynfor’s home.
She called out to the woodmaker, “It is time.”
Cynfor stepped out, clutching an iron rod and the wheel of the year coated with gooey tar.  As the three walked together to the center of the village, men, women, and children gathered around the druidess, muttering, “Lleu,” and “coward.”
Scanning the angry faces in the crowd, Wyndolen sighed. If only they knew the truth about him. But she couldn’t blame them, she was as guilty as they were. She hadn’t recognized he was a god, even after he’d told her. No, he had to show her his magic spear and reveal his dazzling aura. Now the others needed to learn the truth.  Tonight, at his festival, she would announce who he really was. But first she had to prepare her tribesmen for the news, to lessen their shock.
She held her palm upward toward the crowd and cleared her throat. “Hear me, I have a surprise for all of you. The presence of the god Lleu is here. You do not see him as he is in the guise of one of us. So, take care of how you treat each other, lest you offend the deity.”
Their expressions shifted from anger to shame as they were now all on their best behavior.
Taking graceful steps, she led all her tribesmen, chief, and Lleu to a cliff. Their chief proudly carried a blazing firebrand, and Cynfor held the sacred wheel with reverent hands. Everyone grew quiet and gazed down the mountain slope.
Wyndolen announced, “We have gathered this Lughnasa to observe the Wheel of the Year as it turns.” She raised her arms to the sky and smiled at Lleu as she chanted, “The sun burns, yet winter nears. The season turns. Summer comes to an end. Sun and earth, life to death the wheel turns, Lughnasa, Lughnasa.”
She took the torqueh from Corio, handed it to Lleu, and he lit the wheel of year aflame. Cynfor handed Wyndolen the iron rod. Then, the sun god, Lleu, ran beside her, on the other side of the flaming wheel, as she used the rod to roll it down that part of the mountain slope.
She chanted, “God of the sun, the wheel has turned, the yearly end of your reign has come.”
Smoke rose, as flames ate the wood. The wheel reached its end at the foot of the slope and crumbled into ash and burning fragments. The crowd stopped in their tracks and circled the symbol of the dying Lleu.

The Celtic Warrior Queen influenced Cornelia Amiri to write professionally. Cornelia loves history and in reading a book about the dark ages, she came across the rebel queen, who inspired her so much, she started jotting down notes. And she’s been writing books on purpose ever since. Drawing on her love of a happy ending she’s currently penned 39 published romance books.

INTERVIEW WITH NIKI MCALISTER (DJINN)

Well, we're just about through July in the weirdest summer I have ever experienced.  It's been so busy for me at work that I haven't had time to sit down and read anything, but if you've got some time on your hands, Niki McAlister is here to talk about her latest novel. Welcome, Niki!
SC: Can you tell us a little something about the main character in your book?

NM: Djinn is 100 years old in this story, but he is roughly 150 in my trilogy, Serving the Scales. He is basically the naga version of a playboy.
If you are unfamiliar with nagas, don't worry. I focused on them because it's actually pretty rare that you see nagas in a fantasy story. Nagas are half snake, half human—but in my world humans are long gone, having interbred themselves with the elves and anything else that would have them until they no longer exist by themselves. There's some dirty jokes to be made there, but I'll keep it PG.

So Djinn was born into a wealthier family. His father is on a council of nagas that control the flow of information to the King of the nagas. He is pretty used to living off of his father's money, with no desire to settle down or behave. He has a younger brother named Junard, who at the time of Djinn's novel had just started working for the naga breeding program—making him the favorite child. He's pretty self absorbed, but his entire life is about to be thrown upside down and he doesn't even know it.
SC: I was unfamiliar with nagas, so thanks for the explanation. Do you believe in the paranormal and if so, do you have an experience you can share?

NM:  I do believe in the paranormal, though I'm not exactly religious and I do believe that the two are closely related. I experience sensations of deja vu fairly often, finding myself meeting and talking to people that I swear I've spoken to before.
When I was younger my family owned a little house in Lehigh Acres, FL and my sister had her own room because she had some medical issues and needed to be alone quite often. She had this rocking chair in the corner by her closet and sometimes when I walked past her room I would see someone sitting on it. For awhile I shrugged it off, assuming it was one of her stuffed animals or the bad lighting of the room as it had this horrible dark green carpet. It wasn't until my sister spoke up about feeling like someone was watching her in her sleep and my mother admitted to seeing shadows in there sometimes that I let myself realize that something was probably going on. My mom thinks it was the spirit of one of her relatives, but I always felt like it was something sinister.

SC: Thanks for sharing that. What titles are you working on now that you can tell us about?
NM:  My current plans are to release several books in this order, though they are subject to change:

Serving the Scales book 2 (Name still being worked on)
Rory (A prequel in the same format as Djinn featuring, you guess it, Rory)

Serving the scales book 3 (Name still being worked on.)
After Serving the Scales is over I want to go back in time and highlight the pantheon of gods that govern over this world and others. This will feature the Peacock god, Zirato, and his brother Arisa. We're going to meet Zirato's wife and see the dark and terrifying way they met, courted and ultimately ended up together, forever changing the laws of the universe. This story is currently outlined as a duet, and has no name.  I'll most likely be sandwiching  a super special mermaid story between each book of the duet, but I haven't decided yet.

SC: That's a lot on your plate. We'd better let you get to it. Thanks for dropping by today.

Book Description:

Born into a wealthy family on the west side of the Naga Kingdom, Djinn De’monte has always lived a life of undeserved luxury. He parties every night courtesy of his father’s money and, with a flick of his hand, can bed any woman he chooses.

Why would he ever give any of that up to settle down and work a regular job? Everything he needs is right at his fingertips, but when an unexpected tragedy strikes the rug is suddenly yanked out from under him. Djinn is forced to sink or swim.

Join him on his forced pilgrimage as he reluctantly discovers that there is more to life than having everything served to you on a silver platter. Will he learn just what he stands for, or will he be swept up with the rest of the garbage?

In this short prequel we travel back to Djinn’s youth to find out exactly what transpired before he met a very unusual servant girl. This story can be read before Serving the Scales, after, or by itself. Though Djinn’s story isn’t part of the Serving the Scales Trilogy, it is an important part of the history that took place in Iruli.

Excerpt:

“You can’t go in there right now, he’s in a meeting!” The butler elf cried, trying to insert himself between me and the double doors of my father’s office. I slapped him aside with a brush of my tail, sending him clattering into the wall. As he sputtered in surprise I threw open the doors, my faded green locks whipping in the artificial breeze as I met my father’s deadpan stare.
“Djinn, now isn’t a good time.” He said, dismissing me with his hand but I would have none of it.
“Are you directly responsible for the suffering of countless pregnant women and children?” I seethed, glaring directly into my father’s eyes.
“Djinn..” Dad’s face was blank as I heard someone clear their throat to my left.
Councilman Wartez was seated on a cushion there, looking up at me in disapproval—but I didn’t care. “Well? Are you?” I repeated.
“Djinn if you could come back later I’d be happy to—”
“No, we’re going to talk about this now dad.” I huffed, raising my tail to tower over him.
Dad sighed. “Where are you hearing this from? Is this about Jess? I assure you she received the best care.”
“Why aren’t all of the pregnant nagas in the East city receiving that type of care? Are you aware that they’re being treated on the damp ground?”
“Surely those people must be used to doing things on the damp ground.” Councilman Wartez snickered beside me.
“Are you fucking with me right now?” I spun around to the councilman. “People are dying and you’re over here making jokes? Why isn’t the council doing anything to help?”
Dad glared up at me through his tiny glasses. “Not that you’ve ever cared before, but we’ve been conducting tests on the female naga’s issue for decades. We’ve informed everyone that, should they find themselves pregnant they should seek proper medical care.”
I slammed my hands down on his desk, remembering all the times he’d had the maid whip me for touching his desk. His eye twitched as he looked down at my hands. “You do realize that most of the citizens in the East city can’t afford to see a doctor, right?”
“That’s being quite presumptuous. I’ll have you know that we installed Deklyn over there to care for the elves ten years ago. They’re being cared for better than they ever did in that backwoods place they hail from.”
“You know damn well I’m not talking about the elves.” I seethed.
He shrugged, making my blood boil. “You and your council buddies could easily extend a hand to these women but you’re not!”
“That’s enough Djinn.” Dad rose, grabbing my hand and pulling it off his desk.
“It’s not nearly enough dad.”
“I must ask you to go home and we’ll discuss this at another time.”
“Fuck you.” I spat. “You’ll just send Natasha over with more money or a fucking fruit basket to shut me up, you bastard.”
“That’s enough!” Dad boomed, coming around the side of his desk. “One more word out of you and I’ll cut you off.”
“I dare you.” I grinned, spitting on the ground in front of him. I raised my gaze back to his face to relish in the shock I’d caused but to my surprise I felt my father’s fist collide with my cheek as he snarled at me. I flew backward, hitting my head on the back wall of the office and pulling down a bunch of books as I slumped to the ground.

“I’m sorry for this outburst Councilman Wartez.” Reginald was saying, shaking the councilman's hand. The last thing I remembered was both of the councilmen looking over at me in amusement as I passed out.

INTERVIEW WITH SHANA VERNON (The Assasin's Daughter)

What a crazy world this is right now, n'est pas? Time to escape for a few moments and enjoy our chat with author Shana Vernon. Welcome, Shana!

SC: Tell me a little bit about your main character of this book.
SV: Lenna’s character is extremely loyal and brave as she infiltrates the Guild in order to discover why her father went missing. She was hidden from the world her entire life because her existence is forbidden, so she uses an alias and hides her powers.
She is rational and not guided by her emotions, knowing that is the best way to find her father. She has self-doubt, but tries to work through it because her father’s life is on the lines should she fail.
She has incredible powers, but she isn’t infallible. As the book goes on, her character develops a slight dark edge in her desperation to save her father.
SC: Speaking of incredible powers, do you believe in the paranormal and if so, do you have an experience you can share?
SV: When I was sixteen years old, I was on a date with a boy. On the way home, someone sideswiped his car and we both pulled over to give insurance details. The man who hit us was angry and quite violent, and his emotional state continued to escalate to a dangerous point.
Out of nowhere, someone showed up and immediately calmed down the other man, who agreed to hand over his insurance information. After we exchanged our details, we looked back to thank the person who helped deescalate the situation, but he was gone.
Many religions believe in the idea of a guardian angel, and that was the one experience where I was willing to believe it was possible. He showed up, helped out, and disappeared.
SC: Thanks for telling your story. What titles are you working on now that you can tell us about?
SV: I am working on three works at the moment.
The Assassin’s Revenge - The Hybrid Chronicles Book Two.
Sofia - a prequel novella to The Assassin’s Daughter that focuses on Sofia’s history and how she ended up in the Guild.
The Gladiator’s Escape - This is a companion novel to The Assassin’s Revenge, which follows one of the characters that is introduced towards the end of the book.
SC: Sounds like you've got a lot on your writing tablet, we'd better let you go and take a look at your novel now. Thanks for joining us.

Excerpt #1: (172 words)

The crowd parted just enough for her to behold the most adorable animal she’d ever seen. It was a seal, maybe four feet in length, with a torpedo-shaped body, short, steel-gray fur, and a white spotted underbelly. A bulbous head, containing intelligent black eyes, smiled back at her, causing her infectious laugh to broadcast over the collective.

A man she hadn’t noticed knelt next to the seal and turned his head slowly at the sound of her laugh, seemingly searching for someone or something. He wore dark mirrored sunglasses, but somehow, she knew the power of the gaze behind the glasses would be transfixing. With the descending sun on her back, the pendant she wore grew hot and felt like a kind of pressure pushing her back. Raven couldn’t take her gaze off the man as the sun shone on his face, making it awash with light. She could tell his hair was very light and that he had a short beard and muscular body.

The weight of his stare scared her.

Excerpt 2:

With my good arm, I pull my leg up to bend the knee. Hiking the hem of my dress up, I reveal torn muscle and shredded skin. I wince as the fabric moves over it, tugging flaps of skin in directions they aren’t meant to go.
Elias’ hands set to work, scooping water up, and pouring it over my thigh. Each drop, gentle as the administration of them may be, pulls a moan of pain from my lips. Wrapping fingers tightly around a stone, I do what I can to bear the pain without making Elias feel worse.
The blood washes away, revealing the true devastation wrought by the dead wolf’s jaws. My leg hangs open, dark muscle showing itself to the sky as it was never meant to do.
“Itand have mercy,” he whispers, calling on the goddess of fortitude.
But she’ll spare no blessings for the likes of me.
“What do I need to do?” he asks. His eyes roam over me, and one hand finds its way to my cheek. Brows knitted together, he clearly longs for something to do, some reassurance that I’ll be ok.
Does he want me to be alright for the sake of spending more time together? Or merely for the sake of having an escort for the rest of the trek?
I hope for his sake that it’s the latter. But the well of loneliness within me wishes for the former.
Either way, there’s nothing he can do.
“My body will mend itself,” I tell him. “It’ll hurt, but it’ll mend. It’s already started.”
His eyes drop to my arm, my leg. The bleeding has stopped, and the cuts aren’t as deep as they were mere seconds ago. Had he seen it when the wounds were first inflicted, he likely would’ve been sick.
“I wish you would’ve let me help,” he murmurs, sliding his hand along my jaw until his thumb finds my earlobe.
Exhaustion pulls my inhibitions low. Despite myself, despite the guilt churning within me, I lean into his caress.
Nolan won’t want me back, anyway.
My heart shrinks from the thought, and I close my eyes, nuzzling my cheek into Elias’ palm.
“Letting you help would’ve been a terrible idea. They could never kill me. They had no salt, no silver. They couldn’t say any incantations.”
I pause, squeezing my eyes tight against the horrid images which flash before them. I don’t want to see the ways they could’ve hurt him. I don’t want to watch them tear him to shreds. I don’t want to see his blood on the ground.
“They could’ve killed you, though,” I whisper.
Suddenly desperate to see him alive and healthy, to ease my conscience just a bit, I open my eyes. Sure enough, he’s there, face inches from mine. The moonlight glows in his magnificent eyes, but the blood of the Howlers still adorns his face.
Reaching for his sodden shirt, I lift a corner of it to his face. Wiping away the dried blood, I memorize the strength in his jaw, the kindness in his eyes. I trace the small kink in his nose, a remnant from a previous fight.
From a distance, it’s almost impossible to notice, but this close…
My eyes drop to his lips, full and soft. They part, but only to speak.
Confusion wrinkles his brow. “If they couldn’t kill you, why were they sent after us? To maim you and kill me?”
“No,” I say, shaking my head. I stifle a groan as my thigh stitches itself together. “They sent them to find us. They know where we are, now. They know which way we were headed. They’ll find us.”
Those words sew our lips shut, for we both know. This won’t be the last of the vampire and his pledge. And if this was just the search party, what awaits us down the path?
