Teaser Excerpt:

"We won't hurt you if you cooperate."
The silver dagger hovered above my bare arm, and I screamed when I thought it was going to touch my skin. Unfortunately, the myth about silver and vampires is true. It'll burn our flesh, and whatever it touches heals slowly.
Aiden questioned to the woman, "Iona?"
She looked troubled, but nodded her head, "we need more information. It's either her or us." Then she looked at me and asked, "don't you care that Chronos is killing off rival clans? We just want to be left alone, but we need an antidote."

Excerpt

“The plaid looks good,” she remarked, eying Fraser with appreciation.
She had worked tirelessly to mend his ripped and tattered MacLomain tartan. Now he wore nothing but the plaid wrapped around his waist and over his shoulder. Another means to test her, she was sure. Because there was no finer sight than Fraser dressed as he was with his chiseled muscles bared to the world.
“I think he enjoys his vanity fed,” Innis muttered as he grinned and rolled his eyes at the hill behind them. A hill that had hosted many a lass over the past few hours. Lasses, quite assuredly, out for a late-afternoon stroll to enjoy the view. And though they would claim otherwise, that view had nothing to do with the lovely bay.
Even Audric was aware of the women, his cheeks turning red when he dared a random peek over his shoulder.
“Well, I would see Fraser’s vanity challenged,” Elspeth murmured, not speaking of his good looks as she picked up one of several swords Innis had brought down. One suited to her size. She met Fraser’s eyes in challenge. “Do ye accept, then?”
His brows perked in interest. “Ye know how to fight?”
“Of course,” she replied, wide-eyed. “’Twould be foolish in these tryin’ times not to, aye?”
“I suppose ‘twould,” he concurred, a new spark in his eyes. One, she realized, born of a man who appreciated a woman who knew how to defend herself.
“So will ye then?” She made a show of testing the weight of the blade and even executed a few novice swings to prove she was good but not that good.
When a small smirk hovered on his lips, and his eyes narrowed on her grip, she knew he had her figured out.
“’Tis a good enough method making your opponent think ye cocky rather than talented,” he acknowledged. “But you’ll want to work some on your expression.”
“My expression?”
“Aye, ‘tis that of one with confidence, not insecurity.” He stepped close and brushed the pad of his weapon-roughened thumb between her brows. “It should furrow here as though ye are concentrating verra hard indeed.” Then he grazed it along her lips. “These should be turned down and mayhap wobble a wee bit as ye begin to doubt yourself. As if ye just realized ye took on more than ye can handle facing off with your particular enemy.”
After that, he dusted the outer edge of her brow indicating her eyes. “And these, of course, are your best weapon if you’re fighting a lad. Use them to look him over as if sizing him up.” A knowing gleam lit his eyes. “A look as if you’re trying to determine his weaknesses but realize mayhap there’s something to be attracted to instead.”
“I willnae do that,” she rebuffed, chuckling despite herself. “’Tis foolish.”
“I dinnae know.” Innis stroked the braids in his beard as he contemplated Elspeth. “I think Fraser is right. Especially when it comes to ye.”
“’Twill make me seem daft!” she retaliated.
“’Twill make ye seem as your rival likely expects ye to be,” Fraser counseled, still close enough that she could feel his heat. “A lass with a proper eye to pleasing a lad instead of a disobedient hellion trying to be something she’s not.”
When she narrowed her eyes, he merely shrugged and grinned. “I didnae say I agree with that mindset.” He stepped back and held his sword at arm’s length. “I’m more the sort that enjoys a wee lassie with a bit of backbone.”
“Good then.” She straightened said backbone and held her blade at the ready, wishing she wore trousers instead of a skirt.
They eyed one another and circled before she came at him fast. When he dodged, she spun quickly, came in low only for him to leap back with a grin of approval.
“Ye use your size to your advantage,” he praised. “And keep your movements quick but small.”
“Aye.” She ducked beneath the swing of his blade. “Douglas always said to conserve my energy. Especially when fighting a seasoned warrior.”
Innis guffawed. “Well, you’re certainly fighting such now, lassie!”
“Your brother’s words were wise,” Fraser conceded as they continued battling. While she knew he was holding back some, she could tell by his random nods of approval that it wasn’t as much as he thought it would be.
Yet as they continued crossing swords, she saw something shift in his eyes moments before he came at her a little harder. While she initially thought he was competitive and could not help himself, she soon realized it was for another reason altogether.
He truly cared about her well-being and wanted her to fight the best she could.
So as they fought and her energy waned, he offered not only praise where it was due but pointed out her every weakness. An elbow held too high on a swing. The incorrect angle of her knee when lunging. Breathing too heavily when she should be trying to measure her breaths for certain movements and speed. His was a well-balanced dance. A very specific manipulation of the body that included a mixture of thought out planning and spontaneity.
By the time they were finished, she was sore in places she had never felt pain.
“Thank ye,” she managed, as she tossed aside her blade, planted her hands on her knees and tried to catch her breath. “I will be feeling this for days, I imagine.”
“’Tis good.” He smiled. “’Twill give ye a better idea of what needs strengthening.”

Though not a lewd look by any means, as their eyes held, she got the strongest impression he longed to test other muscles as well. To see how limber she really was.

Tagline: Vulcan’s ancient Automata find their purpose rebooted in the second installment of the CIRCO DEL HERRERO series.

Book Description:

The crippled god of metallurgy, fire, and alchemy has many names and many faces—sometimes Hephaestus, Ptah, or Vulcan. He changes to suit his needs. And just like his names, his creations have gone through countless revisions. This time, he’s finally onto something—his Automata have turned the heads of other gods. They’ve noticed their pre-programmed potential. There’s a reason Vulcan didn’t scrap the Automata—a reason he left them in the care of humans all this time. They were just the beta testers for his most intricate windup toy yet…

Vulcan’s ancient Automata find their purpose rebooted in the second installment of the CIRCO DEL HERRERO/THE BLACKSMITH’S CIRCUS series. Their immortal human Masters will drop like flies—superfluous in the next round as the gods shuffle in a new deck of fateful cards. The Masters can choose how and when, but they will all die to free the Automata of their earthly chains. Odys and his Automaton, Maud, struggle to protect his twin sister from the plotting of his dual-bodied adversaries. But his sister, Odissa, finds herself a willing participant in The Blacksmith’s latest exhibition—could she be the missing cog to the god’s tightly wound machine all along?

In this thrilling sequel to THE AUTOMATION, the Narrator and Editor drag readers deeper into the dark history and even darker future of Automata. When the subterranean god emerges with his postlapsarian blueprint, so will the truth about B.L.A. and G.B. Gabbler. Ideal for fans of Scott Hawkin’s The Library at Mount Char, Jo Walton’s The Just City, and all the way to Homer’s The Odyssey, THE PRE-PROGRAMMING is a literary outrage that dares you to keep reading between the lines and the footnotes.

Excerpt:
‘“Why did you call me Dorothy?” Odissa seized the sides of his face, as if she had Dorian trapped now.
“Why? Do you not like this yellow brick road I’m escorting you down?” He sunk lower into the tub, angling her grip on him. Her fingers slid a little on his wet skin. His hair touched the water and fanned out like an aura. He wanted to make sure her hands were still playing nicely.
“That’s not a real answer, Dorian.” She leaned into him.
He floated away from her. He spread out his arms along the tub. His grey eyes closed, readying himself. “I suppose you have a right to know. Odys will tell you eventually, I’m sure. He couldn’t keep his mouth shut.”
“About what?”
He rubbed a finger over his pink upper lip at a false itch. “I knew your real parents, Odissa. At least, I think I did. But I won’t tell you more than that.”
“Why not?”
“Not only would your brother hate me for it, but…” He trailed off.
“Since when do you care what my brother wants? I think he’ll be too distracted about the other stuff we’ve done to care if you tell me. And does this mean he knows? Why does he know but I don’t? It isn’t fair.”
“Your brother knows as much as I do. And believe me, that means he’s not sure of anything.”
“Not sure of what, Dorian?”
He merely smiled. “I’m going to make the others adore you, Odissa. Just you wait. I need to warn you that when they start arriving they might be a little suspicious about what we’ve been up to. They might not understand. Don’t worry. I’ll handle it. They’ll love you. They’ll let me save you.”
“Save me?”
“When we find Madus, he’ll be perfect for you. A twin for a twin.”
She had no idea what he was talking about.
“Then Leeland will never get to you. No one will ever take you away from me again.” He was smiling to himself once more, his finger back at that lip.
“Exactly how many times have I been taken away before?”
“Once, in the past. But an Automaton will keep you here with me forever. You understand? Maybe then—once you have an Automaton—you’ll understand what happened to your parents, why I did what I had to. The Automaton will explain everything.”
“What did you do to my parents, Dorian?” Her heart was making the water ripple despite her body remaining still. “I don’t want an Automaton.”
“Your brother wants you to have one too.” To himself, “That’s why he went so willingly to Rosemund.”
Not sure what he meant, “He won’t give me one if I do not want one.”
“None of us were really given a choice, Odissa. You think you will be? And the others will want to make me happy. I will win them over. I will gain their votes. Why wouldn’t you want an Automaton? You either become one of us or we get rid of you eventually. Why not finalize the deal? You have no life to go back to.”
“You’ve made sure of that, haven’t you?”
He licked his lip, wondering why she was so obstinate. Could she not see what he meant? Surely—for she could see everything else.
“Then let me know why you won’t tell me. Why can’t you tell me why I’m Dorothy?”
His jaw clenched. He did not like her persistence. “You would hate me, that’s why.”
“What if I promised I wouldn’t? Why would it change so much between us? Aren’t we destined to be in love with each other?”
“No. I’m destined to be in love with you. The gods promised us nothing about your love.”
“You were angry with me when I didn’t say I was married. Now you’re the one hiding the truth.”
The water rippled as he huffed. “Leeland has leverage—family members, pets, friends. He uses leverage to try and get our Automatons. He had leverage on me, but…I still have an Automaton, Odissa. You understand what I’m saying?”
He heard her try to swallow.
“Do you understand, Odissa?”’

Forever is a long time to live in despair. 240 years later, she happens upon an English actor named Jack, who happens to look exactly like her dead lover.

Alexandre, her maker and companion, isn’t going to make it too easy for her. Millicent must decide if she’s going to continue to be led by others or take the reins and drive the outcome of her life.

Excerpt:

“Go be miserable somewhere else, Millicent,” grumbles Alexandre.
It’s going to be one of those nights. Alexandre pulls me up and hands me my black leather clutch. He steers me toward the darkly stained front door of our antebellum Savannah home. Before opening the door, he bends down to put shoes on my feet, like I’m a child. If he wants me to brood elsewhere, I will. Alexandre appreciates people who are bright and cheery. His reason for tolerating my presence for so long is one of life’s many mysteries.
“We have all lost people we love, Mills. We go on. If you can’t ever learn to do the same, what’s the point?”
“Good question, what is the point?”
“You can choose to be happy again. I’m not sure how much longer I can stand to have you around like this. For tonight, go find something to distract your mind.”
I can’t blame Alexandre for wanting me to disappear this evening. The life of the party tires of the buzz kill. Thankfully, one of the many wonderful things about Savannah is the abundance of mysterious spots, all perfect for sulking. Secluded squares, thick with foliage dripping in Spanish moss, decaying alleyways lined with ancient cobblestone, and hidden stone staircases topped with wrought iron railings, all provide perfect places to hide away. My stormy mood, has long felt at home in this haunted city.

INTERVIEW WITH NANCY THORNE (Victorian Town)

Join the Live Facebook Party July 11 7-9PM EST

Well hey there, Supernatural Central readers. I've got some computer issues going on, so deep breaths everyone. I don't want you to miss this interview with author Nancy Thorne.

SC: Tell me a little about your main character of this book.

NT: Seventeen-year-old Abby struggles to deal with life on a daily basis. At home, her mother has a drinking problem. At school, she doesn't fit in. Without her best friend, Jessica, life would be intolerable. Still, she seeks to improve the injustices of the world any way she can. When she's dragged back in time through a tourist attraction to 1876, she gets the chance to do exactly that.

But changing history also alters the future, and Abby soon learns that whatever she accomplishes in the past puts the lives of her family and best friend at risk.

When she falls in love with the handsome blacksmith in Victorian Town, everything she believes in is put to the test.

SC: We're all about the paranormal here at Supernatural Central. Do you believe in the paranormal and if so, do you have an experience to share?

NT: I believe there are different dimensions to our universe, although we see no concrete proof of their existence. Twice in my life I've experienced being near loved ones as they passed on. With almost uncanny similarities, both of them spoke of a deceased loved one being in the room with us. I could only surmise that this beloved spirit had come to be there for them. Since those two occurrences, I have no fear of moving on to my next adventure or dimension.

SC: I have a theory about dimensions as well. But in this reality, what titles are you working on now that you can tell us about?

NT: I'm currently working on another young adult novel. Set in the 1970's, it tells the story of two poor best friends who hitchhike across Canada in search of a wealthy ex-boyfriend who has moved with his family to the west coast. Their mission: financial gain. Camping in Jasper, Alberta, the girls meet up with U.S. draft dodgers who have fled to Canada in defiance of being forced to fight in the Vietnam War. A bear attack against one of the girls changes everything ,and their lives will alter in ways they never could have imagined.

SC: Sounds grizzly. Thanks for stopping by. Now let's take a look at Victorian Town.

Excerpt

I waited for him to make the next move, to tell me how inappropriate, how forward that was of me. As I struggled to think of how best to offer an explanation, he turned to me. Gently but deliberately, he moved his hand up my arm, stopping at the nape of my neck beneath the ribbon of the bonnet.
The moment he leaned in, I closed my eyes. His lips, soft and full, touched mine with the modest pressure of an indecisive act. A warm energy coursed through my body, but the strangest thing was that everything felt unbelievably familiar, like it had all been rehearsed before that moment. I held onto this profound feeling, not wanting it to leave, until Ben removed his lips from mine.
Even with the whistled melodies from a pair of cardinals outside the church's entrance, the following silence felt awkward. It persisted, and I assumed Ben was already regretting kissing me.
"Miss Abigail−"
I brought up a hand and covered his mouth. "It's okay."
We walked down the hill without saying another word. A lot of activity was happening on Main Street: coaches lined the front of the Royal Hotel as travelers zipped in and out of the main entrance; horse carts delivered goods in dashes of haste; store merchants hurried beyond their open doors; street sellers sold goods out of baskets; helpers swept the boardwalk; ladies could be seen purchasing last minute necessities behind the windows of each shop.
Ben accompanied me up the stairs of Town Hall's entrance and stopped on the landing before we reached the front door. I peered through the window. Martha arranged long-stemmed flowers in a vase on a table at the side of the ballroom. A young man placed a candelabra on a table and then another on top of a piano. Ben had already started back to the street when I turned. He waved. I waved back. Still a chance he'll change his mind.
The gloves were easier to remove now that one was missing its button. I placed them, and the button, on the ledge of the window and took off the ring.
Jess was still sitting on my bed when the haze cleared, but her tapping fingers had moved from her chin, which now rested on her knuckles. It was obvious it had taken longer for me to return this time. It made sense to me right then that the ring held within it a finite amount of energy with which to transport me to the past and back home, like a battery depleting its energy with each use. And, I had no idea how to recharge it.
